Did Apple Hoard M1 Max processors for use in the new Mac Studio?

Apple announced the new Mac Studio less than two weeks ago, at their Peek Porfance event on March 8th, 2022. The new Mac is powered by either an M1 Max or the new M1 Ultra processor — which is essentially two M1 Max processors stuck together. Preorders began the same day and people have already started receiving their new Macs.

Now, here’s the thing. I ordered a new 16″ MacBook Pro with an M1 Max back on February 12th to replace my aging 2016 15″ MacBook Pro. I’m still waiting. The estimated delivery date is April 13-20, two months+ after I ordered it. My wife ordered her new MacBook Pro on the same day (replacing a 2012 model) and she received hers a couple of weeks ago. The big difference — hers is an M1 Pro (not Max).

So, this has left me wondering, did Apple hoard M1 Max processors so that they would have them available for the forthcoming announcement of the new Studio?

Steve Jobs Resigns as CEO of Apple!

I haven’t been doing much blogging lately, but this is way too big not to make note of. Today, Steve Jobs formally resigned his position as Apple’s Chief Executive Officer. Wow!

Steve’s resignation letter

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Although he has maintained an active role with Apple, Steve has been on medical leave since January (2011). Given his ongoing health issues, we all knew this day could come, but it was no less shocking when I read the news today. Apparently Steve’s resignation as CEO, his election to Chairman of the Board, and Tim Cook’s election to CEO all take effect immediately. The full press release is available, here.

This is so sad! Take care of yourself, Steve. All our best go out to you and your family.

Love it, love it, love it! ThinkGeek always comes up with the best stuff on April 1st. I don’t know if they’ll actually start selling these PLAYMOBIL™ Apple Store Playsets, but they sure are cool. The optional Line Pack is especially hilarious!

A year or two ago they put up this Tauntaun sleeping bag as an April Fools gag, but it was so popular they decided to actually make them. So, who knows?

Apple Releases iOS 4.3

This morning Apple released iOS 4.3 for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, with some nice enhancements including, AirPlay Enhancements, Faster Safari, iTunes Home Sharing, and Personal Hotspot (for iPhone 4). Read all about the new features, here.

You’ll want to download iTunes 10.2.1 before updating, for full compatibility. And, as always, I suggest syncing your device before applying the iOS update in iTunes to make sure everything is backed up.

When Apple announced the iPad 2 this past Wednesday, they lowered the price of the original iPad by $100. You just need your original receipt, and the return must be made within 14 days of purchase.
