Shottr: An Awesome Mac Screenshot Utility!

Shottr Mac Screenshot App

Shottr is quite possibly the best screenshot software for the Mac I’ve ever used! I can’t say enough about how much I like this app. It’s obviously built by people who care about quality.

From the website:

“Shottr is a small, fast, human-sized screenshot app built for those who care about pixels. It was crafted with Swift, optimized for M1, and is completely free at the moment.”

Scrolling screenshots, rulers, text recognition (OCR), and a color picker are just a few of its many features. You can even vote on what features they add next directly on the homepage. Go grab a copy while it’s still free. I have it, but I’m totally willing to pay for this kind of high-quality and extremely useful software. If the Shottr folks happen to come across this post, please don’t follow the trend of making it a subscription. Single purchase, family licensing, paid upgrades are all fine — I just can’t take another subscription.

Journal Bandolier by Cleverhands

Journal Bandolier by Cleverhands

In today’s world of iPhones and iPads I don’t find myself carrying a paper notebook too often anymore. But when I do, carrying the associated pens and pencils is usually a little cumbersome. Fortunately this cool Journal Bandolier by Cleverhands looks like it could be exactly what I need. It comes in multiple sizes and styles.

From Cleverhands:

Some time ago I made a journal bandolier for myself. After the 8th person asked me where they could get one it occurred to me that I wasn’t the only person sick of losing pens and breaking pencil points, or having inspiration hit only to find I had nothing to draw or write with!

This style of Bandolier is handmade using black leather and elastic. The strap is 2 inches wide and sewn into a loop which measures 5.75 inches long when laid flat. It fits easily around books that run a little over 5 inches wide such as the Moleskine 5.52×8.25 inch journal or the Handbook journal of a similar size. Each loop is approximately 1 inch wide. There are a total of 7 loops.

This is a handmade item and will have variations from the photograph. I find many of my materials, including the leather in this bandolier at a center for creative reuse to improve the carbon footprint things I make.

F*ck You. Pay Me. By Mike Monteiro

If you’re a freelancer or small business owner you should check this out. It’s a great talk by Mike Monteiro, Design Director and co-founder of Mule Design Studio, on the benefits of having a contract. It was filmed on March 25th, 2011, as part of the Creative Mornings (San Francisco) sessions. There’s a followup blog post, here.

This talk is specific to the design industry, but it’s good advice for everyone.

PressPausePlay: A Film About Hope, Fear and Digital Culture

About PressPausePlay:

The digital revolution of the last decade has unleashed creativity and talent of people in an unprecedented way, unleashing unlimited creative opportunites.

But does democratized culture mean better art, film, music and literature or is true talent instead flooded and drowned in the vast digital ocean of mass culture? Is it cultural democracy or mediocrity?

This is the question addressed by PressPausePlay, a documentary film containing interviews with some of the world’s most influential creators of the digital era.

This looks really cool, I would love to see it. Unfortunately the screening dates and locations are a little limited right now, and there’s been no announcement of the DVD release date. You can, however, save it in your Netflix Queue. It should be automatically added when it becomes available.

Turbine-Free Wind Power

Turbine-Free Wind Energy Video

This looks very cool. The video isn’t embed-able, so you’ll have to watch it, here.

Conservationists argue that wind turbines pose a risk to birds, bats and sensitive habitats like shorelines. People living close to wind farms, meanwhile, complain of constant noise and vibration. This year, engineers responded with a new way to draw electricity from the wind: oscillating wind panels. Read More…

Business in Bloom: Producing Martha Stewart Living’s iPad edition

Speaking of Adobe, I do really like this promotional video they did for the production of Martha Stewart Living digital magazine.

Although this video was intended to promote Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite, it’s every bit (and possibly more) a video about how cool the iPad is. In fact, the very first words you hear are Martha Stewart saying, “When I saw that iPad, I wanted a digital issue of the magazine… immediately!”
