.Mac email aliases don’t really work on the iPhone

This probably won’t matter to most people out there, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

If you use aliases with your .Mac account, and you have an iPhone, be careful who you reply to. An email sent to your .Mac alias can be received just fine on your iPhone, but if you reply from your iPhone, your REAL .Mac address will be used. The iPhone can’t send from your alias, like your desktop app can.

Hopefully this will be fixed in a future software update.

  1. Paul,

I got my iPhone on the 29th and love it! One thing that I noticed on ODL is that you have an extreme amount of iPhone posts. Why don’t you just create a whole category for it? Keep on Blogging, and healing!

  2. I HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION TO THE IPHONE-ALIAS ISSUE: This only works with .Mac set as a POP account. I synced my mac mail with my iphone. I have several .mac aliases that also synced. If I sync my .mac pop account and then delete all aliases, except the alias I want to use, from the iPhone preferences, I can send mail from that alias! I am now happy with my iPhone mail.

If you are an IMAP user, then you will not be able to use the alias.

  3. Sounds great, rocket. But please tell me: after installing my .mac email as a POP, I’m NOT able to setup a pop account in Mail for the alias. It stops as soon as I reach the point of filling in my username and password.

When I sync my primary .mac (pop) account to my iPhone, it also does not automatically takes the alias with it into the iPhone.

Whats is it that makes me fail time after time? Looking forward to some extra info. Thanks, Frank.
