I’m taking a little poll. Anne Marie and I are having a little debate on whether or not these shoes would be called sandals. I won’t say which side I’m on just yet, but I’m curious what you think… are these sandals, or not?
UPDATE: OK, Now that many people have chimed in, including Anne Marie, I can give my opinion, without being accused of trying to skew the results. These are NOT sandals. I Win! Oh, and for all who inquired… they came from Macy’s.
At first thought anything with a heel seems out of the running for a sandal by I checked out Dictionary.com and they might qualify by there definition.
1. A shoe consisting of a sole fastened to the foot by thongs or straps.
2. A low-cut shoe fastened to the foot by an ankle strap.
3. A rubber overshoe cut very low and covering little more than the sole of the shoe.
4. A strap or band for fastening a low shoe or slipper on the foot.
Uh…I don’t care what the dictionary says. Those are NOT sandals. Those have heels. If you would believe what the cartoonists draw, Jesus wore sandals and I don’t see him pimping those things.
N-o.
I say those are not sandals.
Wikipedia disagrees:

Who cares what wikipedia says? No me.
Those are not sandals in my book.
My wife says they are not sandals.
But now she wants a pair of them. Thanks a lot.
Sorry about that ;)
I”ll find out where she got them.
In my opinion they are not sandals.
The wife and I say no way. Too dressy.
I’d say they’re strappy heels. Very kicky! Very cute! If I wore heels, those would be lovely. Kudos to Anne Marie for a very fashionable, yet classy, pair of shoes.
No way are those sandals. I mean absolutely not!
A firm NO.
in response to Alice, SelfishGene and p a u l: i’m a flat-soled, walking-type of girl myself and rarely buy heels (i can actually fall off of flats in some cases) , but i needed a pair of nice ‘sandals’ for the trip, so I splurged and got these…they are tremendously comfortable… minus an occasional wobble due to uneven pavement….admittedly I am the one who called them sandals…and now I stand corrected…moreover…I am truly glad that I didn’t bet a drink on the outcome with p a u l….thanks all for joining in the poll…oh by the way….macy’s
Oh, too late on the poll! I would say they are not sandals. Sandals are like Tevas and Birkenstocks. But I’m impressed you got 13 responses, and it wasn’t even multiple choice! Paul, you have such the following!
Stop while you are ahead. Delete this post and all references to it. Agree with her, if her feet look that great in them it’s meaningless what you call them.
whatever they are, they’re ugly.
They’re not ugly! I think they look good – but they’re definitely shoes!
I don’t think they are sandals. I agree that the heel throws the sandal category out the window. Unfortunately, the boss tells me I’m wrong. She states they are and that is the final word. Chris knows his role..
These are shoes!
(My wife says they are sandals…)
Alright so what should I say….. NOOOOOOPE Those aren’t even close!!!
no way. raised heels is an automatic disqualification. sandals = informal, raised heels = not informal
Ladies here in South Korea typically refer to this sort of footwear as a ‘sandal’. Who am I – a mere male – to argue?
Don’t think they are sandles Paul – look like fancy shoes to me.
