.Mac Virex NOT compatible with Tiger

If you’ve recently upgraded to Tiger and you use Virex, you should know that Virex is NOT compatible with Tiger. You should uninstall it asap. Even if you’ve turned off all scanning from within Virex it still leaves a background process called VShield running. That background process sucks up a tremendous amount of processor time, and will slow you mac down to a crawl.

Apple has put out a easy to follow article for uninstalling Virex. I also found this email on the Apple Support forums…

“…Thank you for contacting Apple.

Virex is not currently compatible with Mac OS X v10.4. Virex is compatible with Mac OS X versions 10.1.5 through 10.3.x. We will maintain updated virus-definition files for active .Mac members until May 31, 2006.

If you plan to upgrade to Mac OS X v10.4 and wish to uninstall Virex, please follow the instructions in this article:

Apple takes virus protection seriously. As a result, .Mac email servers scan and remove viruses from all email messages sent to .Mac accounts, protecting you from viruses even if you don’t have virus-protection software installed on your computer.
